History is made

Saturday morning 16th May 2020 dawned like most other Highveld autumn days. Coldish but with the sun shining to promise a nice warm morning. There was certainly nothing to indicate that this was a day that history was to be made.

The first remote learning experience

It was the day we were going to put into practise the saying

“if the mountain won’t come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the mountain”

or to be more exact

“if the students can’t come to lectures, then Bushveld Mosaic will go to the students.

We had not had any prior experience in this kind of activity so the platform selected was Zoom as a number of people said “It’s easy, it works and it’s free”. The module chosen for this historic occasion was Amphibians, mainly because it is one of the lectures that Maria presents, so we were able to undertake some pre-experimentation exercises, without too much trouble.

Whilst there is no doubt that there is a bit of a learning curve to this medium, and as humans we almost certainly missed some of the interactions that take place at the Saturday morning lectures (not to mention the coffee and biscuits), the event overall was a success and we will use it to complete the lecture only modules, rather than let Covid-19 put a total stop to our 2020 progress.

Next up Reptiles on Saturday 30th

Bushveld Mosaic a course for the curious, fun loving, serious, passionate or career-minded nature enthusiast!
