BM2025-26 Birds Weekend

Web Report by Otlotleng Blessing Sekhweta

Friday 20 March 2026 – Arrival and Lectures

On Friday, most of the Bushveld students arrived at Borakalalo Nature Reserve, settled in, and were joined by the Knox family. After arrival, we attended introductory lectures where we were introduced to the birds’ module from 19:00 until 20:00. During that time, the Bushveld Mosaic Coordinators also updated us about the next day’s schedule.

Saturday, 21 March 2026- Arthropods test and Bird Lectures.

On Saturday, we woke early in the morning to attend a birds identification class from around 06:00. The Grassland group went with Bruce to find and identify birds and the Wetland group went with Ulrich. This was to teach students about different methods for identifying birds, not only by colour and sound but also by size and shape.

We wrote the arthropods test as scheduled around 10:00. Immediately after the test, we attended a mini assessment for individuals for the field study of birds. We broke for lunch for 1 hour and 30 Minutes.

After lunch, we continued with lectures which included bird migration, resident birds and non-resident birds.

Sunday 22 March 2026- Final Lectures and Departure.

Sunday was final lecture of the Birds module. Except for the rain, everyone enjoyed the weekend and we appreciated the lectures, five Knox family members, and students for the productive weekend.

ED’s note: Thanks Blessing for providing us with the details enjoyed by all at the Birds module
